Modern and Nature: A Residence Redefined

Wei Ting Lin's Award-Winning Design Transforms a Villa into a Sky-Inspired Haven

The "Modern and Nature" project is a residence designed for a middle-aged aviation sport enthusiast and his family. The design concept is inspired by the view of the sky and flying clouds visible from the living room's French window. This concept subtly reflects the client's enthusiasm for aviation.

The design stands out for its innovative space layout, which was reorganized without altering the building's appearance. The entrance was switched to the south, adding a grand foyer that serves as a flow guide line. The cross-pattern on the floor divides different zones, while the furniture is arranged freely. The ceiling is covered with mirror material to erase the sense of pressure, and the ground floor is designed as an open layout. The French windows bring in the exterior scenery, and passive design of air circulation is applied throughout the project.

The materials used in the project include hard wood, walnut wood, Italian brand paint, stone material, bespoke branded furniture and lighting, mirror material, and veneer for the ceiling. The interior of the solarium in the yard is sunken to avoid view obstruction, and glass materials are used to bring in sunlight, creating a bright, warm space for leisure activities.

The project covers a total area of 500 square meters. The basement includes a garage and an open space for a performance area, a bar, and an audio and visual area. Each space is divided by low cabinets. The modern styled master bedroom is in natural earth tone colour. The third floor includes a son's bedroom, a daughter's bedroom, and a living area. The ceiling is designed with unique geometric cutting surfaces, together with light colour furniture to form a lively space. The sunroom has flexible mechanical blinds.

The original layout of the residence was considered out of order, which led the designer to carry out a significant transformation. The client actively participated in the entire construction phase, trusting and supporting the designer's detailed work. The overall design and construction process were carried out smoothly, resulting in a comfortable, bright, and spacious living space of high quality.

The project faced challenges due to the original space layout being unideal and non-functional. A large-scale transformation was required to achieve a perfect organization of each functional space. Despite being a remote project for the design team, the challenge of having precise measurements and accurate detail drawings for the construction by the local builders was overcome. The active participation of the client pushed the project forward, resulting in a successful build within one year of construction.

The design concept of the project, derived from the flying clouds in the sky, indicated the client's enthusiasm towards aviation sport. The modern customized furniture, the application of different materials, and achieving passive ventilation are the highlights of the design. The space layout was remodeled to meet the needs of the family, adding detailed designs to create a modern and pleasant living environment.

The "Modern and Nature" design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is rewarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
